The Convertible Crib: A Wise Choice
Choosing a crib is no easy task, especially knowing that children grow up fast—sometimes too fast! A convertible crib is an excellent choice of furniture that grows with your child. Discover how our 4-in-1 crib options and 3-in-1 crib options are safe, cost-effective, and eco-friendly.
The convertible crib: 3 beds for the price of 1
Unlike standard cribs, our convertible models are designed to grow with your child until early adolescence. The 3-in-1 crib transforms into a daybed, then a single or double bed and the 4-in-1 crib converts into a daybed, a single bed and a double bed (conversion kit sold separetly).
You can therefore use the same piece of furniture to welcome your baby, support them as they grow, and help them make the big leap to a single bed when the time comes. To convert the crib, simply refer to the manufacturer’s conversion kit included with your purchase.
The smooth transition from crib to daybed
Age has no bearing on when to begin the transition from a crib to a daybed. Simply follow your baby’s lead. The transition period typically occurs between 18 and 24 months or once your little one is able to climb the crib’s side rails. This usually means it’s time to remove one of the side rails to allow your child to hop in and out of bed as they please.
With most 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 models such as Dutailier’s Pomelo, Melon and Lollipop converting to a daybed requires very little effort. To take off one of the side rails, simply use an Allen key to remove the six screws that hold it in place. It’s a breeze! As a bonus, you don’t have to buy a new mattress because you keep the one used in the crib.
The shift to a big kid’s bed usually happens quickly after the first transition. Now that your child is aware that they can get in and out of bed as they please—and surprise you in your room—you can begin the gentle transition to a regular bed. With the conversion kit, you can easily transform your daybed into a regular bed. All you need is the right sized mattress, and there you have it: your little one is all grown up!
While many companies only offer a conversion to a double bed, Dutailier models also transform into a single bed. What’s the advantage? You save space in your child’s room. It’s no secret that a nursery is often the smallest room in any home. Furniture adapted to tight spaces is a great way to minimize clutter in the nursery!
Convertible cribs: designed to last
One clear advantage of our convertible crib is its high-quality materials. Given that these beds are designed to be used by your little ones for over a decade, they are made from hardwood and have a sturdy structure. As a result, the crib will safely withstand all your growing baby’s movements. Furthermore, Dutailier uses carefully selected finishes to ensure the quality and durability of its furniture.
Another thing to consider: the colour of your crib. The crib will be the room’s statement piece for many years. With that in mind, we suggest that you opt for a timeless look. By all means, add punch to your decor with patterned or brightly coloured bedding! Your child will be grateful that they don’t have to sleep in a flashy bed as they approach puberty.
The baby’s crib: the highest industry safety standards
Whether or not you opt for a convertible crib, it should meet the highest safety standards.
First, make sure that the space between each bar is 6 cm or less to avoid your baby’s head getting stuck. Furthermore, since 2016, Canada has prohibited the manufacture of drop-side cribs in an effort to reduce the risk of infant injury. Alternatively, choose a crib with a height-adjustable bed base, which makes picking up your newborn easier. This will also allow you to adjust the bed base once your child begins to stand on their own.
Be sure to check that you haven’t left more than 3 cm between the crib mattress and the side rails. Your baby could get stuck, resulting in possible injury. Moreover, a baby’s bed must be stable, solid, and durable to withstand the various stages of their growth. Manufacturing materials and the use of non-toxic finishes are details that must never be overlooked when shopping for a new crib. Canadian-made furniture is quality guaranteed.
Setting up the baby’s room: money talk
It’s no surprise: setting up your baby’s nursery is expensive. In addition to a crib, diapers, and a stroller, there’s an endless list of items to buy to prepare for the arrival of your favourite little human. Every dollar saved counts.
Buying a convertible crib is a cost-effective and profitable option, even though the investment appears quite steep at first. The price point for most 3-in-1 convertible beds is around $1,000.
However, this amount will be amortized over a long period and guarantees a solid and safe piece of furniture adapted to grow with your child. If you’re considering having more than one child, rest assured that your convertible crib will be sturdy enough for every last one. As a bonus, your purchase is eco-friendly as it can be reused for many years to come.
When you buy a convertible crib, you’re also getting peace of mind. For the next 10 years, you won’t have to worry about shopping for a kid’s bed or getting rid of an extra unnecessary one.
